One of the core values protected by s. 8 of the Charter is privacy. Section 8 does not provide a guarantee that individuals will never be subject to searches that hamper their privacy. Searches that are reasonable do not violate s. 8. The purpose of s. 8 is to prevent unreasonable searches or seizures before they occur rather than to remedy them ex post facto. In order to be reasonable, a search must be authorized by law, the authorizing law must itself be reasonable and the search must be conducted in a reasonable manner. ( R v. Cornell 2010 SCC 31)
