The plaintiff is to be compensated by non-pecuniary damages for pain, suffering, loss of enjoyment of life and loss of amenities. The award should be made fairly reviewing other comparable cases, although it is important to bear in mind they serve only as a guide – each case is unique (see: Trites v. Penner, 2010 BCSC 882 at paras. 188-189):
