There are three bases for entitlement to spousal support: contractual, compensatory, and non-compensatory: Bracklow v. Bracklow, 1999 CanLII 715 (SCC), [1999] 1 S.C.R. 420 at para 37. In determining whether a spouse is entitled to spousal support, the court must consider whether the spouse has suffered economic disadvantage as a result of the marriage or its breakdown: Moge v. Moge, 1992 CanLII 25 (SCC), [1992] 3 S.C.R. 813 at para 109.
