What is a service provider's interest in preventing the criminal misuse of its services?

Ontario, Canada

The following excerpt is from R. v. Lefrancois, 2014 ONSC 3096 (CanLII):

A service provider has a legitimate interest in preventing the criminal misuse of its services. That interest may be seen as both a self-interest and a form of "civic engagement", reflecting a corporate commitment to assist in law enforcement's job to prevent public harm or combat crime (R v. Ward, at para. 97). Such interest must be taken into account in the analysis.
