Compensatory support is intended to redress the recipient spouse for economic disadvantage arising from the marriage, or the conferral of an economic advantage upon the other spouse. An award of compensatory spousal support recognizes the sacrifices made by a recipient spouse, for example, where a wife withdraws from the labour force to care for the children. The doctrine of equitable sharing of the economic consequences of a marriage and its breakdown underlies compensatory support: Chutter v. Chutter, 2008 BCCA 507, reconsideration denied 2009 BCCA 117, leave to appeal ref’d [2009] SCCA No. 41, at paras. 50-53.
