"Generally, statements elicited in violation of ... Miranda ... may not be used against the defendant at trial [citation], including to rebut a sanity defense [citations]. This exclusionary rule is applied in prophylactic fashion to deter coercive investigative questioning and advance the trustworthiness of trial evidence, even if the defendant's statements were voluntary apart from the Miranda violation.
