What is the difference between an adoption and an adoption?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from Trotter-Brons (Guardian ad litem of) v. Corrigan, 2016 BCSC 1891 (CanLII):

He also referred to the decision of Mr. Justice Garland in Watson v. Willmott, [1991] 1 Q.B. 140, where he ruled that an adoption replaced non-pecuniary dependency on the deceased and held that such claims are extinguished as of adoption. He declined, however, to attempt to evaluate potential differences between the degree or nature of the care provided.
