In McKeith v. Goodenough, 2003 ABQB 765, Veit J. held that a step-father who lived with the child for most of her life was not required to pay support since there was no evidence that further support from the step-father was necessary for the child’s welfare. The child’s biological father paid child support throughout, which was supplemented by general financial support from the step-father and the child was living with her biological father at the time of the application. Veit J. held that “there could be situations where this latter, supplemental, type of support would be necessary to the welfare of a child. However, in this case, there is no such evidence or submission” (at para. 2).
