Teaching and Learning: Alexi at the Supreme Court of Canada

As part of our commitment to learning and teaching about legal A.I., a few of the Alexi team presented our technology and capability to a select group of lawyers and clerks at the Supreme Court of Canada. What an honour and privilege it was! Now, who's next?

Alexi team visit the Supreme Court of Canada!

As you know, technology—and in particular artificial intelligence—is already impacting the way legal services are being delivered.

Yes, as a lawyer myself, getting used to this fact has been a bit scary at times. But please, let me assure you: the importance of the highly skilled human lawyer is not going away any time soon! In fact, just the opposite is true, and let me explain why.

As technology becomes more powerful and intelligent, the lawyer must play a key role as intermediary between technology and the consumer. For many lawyers, this role is stimulating, challenging, and very good for business. Moreover, it is very well protected from disintermediation, both practically and by regulators (for good reason!).

For growth in this role as intermediary to continue, though, legal A.I. and its significant implications demand us to study it in action and learn the ways in which it can help and hinder the delivery of legal services. You see, while learning and teaching are both professional obligations, for us at Alexi, learning and teaching about legal A.I. is no different.

For this reason, when the Supreme Court of Canada requested a presentation by us on legal A.I., we were both honoured and privileged. We are a fast-growing "start-up", no doubt, but we are nevertheless already recognized as a leader in this space. Given our commitment to learning and teaching about legal A.I., we very quickly obliged to the SCC's request.

As we think about our commitment to learning and teaching about legal A.I., we've recognized that we want the profession to understand how legal A.I. is different than all other kinds of A.I. In particular, we want lawyers to learn the basics of natural language processing and understanding, and how legal A.I. demands the precision rarely seen in other applications.

For these reasons, we are renewing our commitment to learning and teaching about legal A.I., and as such are offering to join you at your firm to present on these topics. If you are interested in learning more, please reach out to us.
