Does a cross-motion for summary judgment need to be approved by the court?

Ontario, Canada

The following excerpt is from Demide v Attorney General of Canada et al., 2015 ONSC 3000 (CanLII):

Numerous decisions in the wake of Hyrniak v. Mauldin, 2014 SCC 7 (CanLII), [2014] 1 S.C.R. 87, have confirmed that the court does not require a cross-motion for summary judgment when it can decide the issue that was the subject matter of another party’s motion for summary judgment.
