What is the role of the trial judge in assessing the credibility of the complainants?

Ontario, Canada

The following excerpt is from R. v. G.P., 2014 ONCA 39 (CanLII):

In a case such as this one, the trial judge is in the best position to assess the credibility of the complainants, the defendant and the other trial witnesses. Review of the trial judge’s credibility assessments is limited and informed by “the special position of the trier of fact on matters of credibility”: R v. W. (R.), 1992 CanLII 56 (SCC), [1992] 2 S.C.R. 122, at para. 21. His findings are entitled to deference.
