The Respondents further say that their refusal to rent a room to the Complainants was rationally connected to their religious belief, and the law recognizes that they cannot be compelled by the state to act in a manner that is inconsistent with a sincerely held religious belief: Her Majesty the Queen v. Big M Drug Mart Ltd., [1985] 1 S.C.R. 296 at para. 95. The Molnars note that they believe their home is a gift from God to be used for his purposes, and that they are accountable for the use of their home, to use it for ministry and to prevent behaviour which their religion prohibits, such as sexual relations between persons of the same sex.
