I am aware of the present philosophy as expressed in Messier v. Delage, 1983 CanLII 31 (SCC), [1983] S.C.R. 401, 35 R.F.L. (2d) 337, 2 D.L.R. (4th) 1, 50 N.R. 16 [Que.], and in the recent legislation the Divorce Act, 1985, s. 17(7)(d). However, the respondent, as I stated earlier, is 61 years of age; to become fully employed as a social worker, while competing with younger people in the present job market, is not particularly realistic. Fortunately, she has a very modest home which is fully paid for, however, she does have an outstanding student loan which was required in order for her to obtain her social work degree. Over and above that she has some other debts. I am satisfied that the respondent has done her utmost to become economically self-sufficient but simply has not been successful.
