Cam (1996) 1996 CanLII 230 (SCC), 1 S.C.R. 500, Mr. Justice Lamer endorsed the fundamental principles that a sentence should contribute to respect for the law and maintenance of a just, peaceful and safe society by imposing just sanctions, and that the sentence must be proportionate to the gravity of the offence and the degree of responsibility of the offender.
