In what circumstances will the grandparents of a child who had a close relationship with their grandchildren be granted party status at the Court of Appeal?

Ontario, Canada

The following excerpt is from Children's Aid Society of Sudbury and Manitoulin v. B.(J.), 2007 ONCJ 153 (CanLII):

[41] In Children’s Aid Society of London Middlesex v. S.H. et al., supra, it was decided that the child’s grandparents (who had a close relationship with their grandchildren before the intervention) be granted party status so that they could properly present their position and so that a full assessment could be made of their capabilities by the court. The issue to be decided in that case is similar in many respects to the issue to be decided in the case at bar.
