Can a police constable walk down the sidewalk at the front of the house far enough to see the house number?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from R. v. Neill, 1993 CanLII 1058 (BC CA):

28 Counsel did not suggest there was any infringement of the appellant's Charter rights by the conduct of the constable walking down the sidewalk at the front of the house far enough to see the house number. On this aspect I agree with the trial judge there can be no expectation of privacy in a house number. If, as in this case, the number can not be seen from the street there seems to me to be an implicit permission to walk far enough up the sidewalk on the premises to see the number. See Regina v. Bushman (1968) 4 C.R.N.S. 13.
