The present case is not dissimilar to Thompson v. Coquitlam (District), 1979 CanLII 665 (B.C.S.C.) where Esson J. (as the then was) dismissed an application to have five actions for wrongful dismissal tried together. All five actions alleged wrongful dismissal each against a different municipality. The plaintiff in each action was dismissed by a municipal defendant after the Province of British Columbia assumed responsibility for delivering social assistance, thereby putting the municipalities “out of the welfare business” as Esson J. put it. All the plaintiffs came to be employed by the Province but the degree to which their new positions were equivalent to the old ones was in issue in the proceedings.
