What is the difference between a termination and a notice of termination?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from Nicholls v. Richmond, 1985 CanLII 366 (BC SC):

In the authorities, the terms "termination" and "notice of termination" are often used interchangeably. It may be that they occur on the same date, as was the case in Ellis v. Whitepass Tpt. Ltd. But it may also be that the notice of termination precedes the actual cessation of employment and payment. In the latter case, the period of notice (or damages in lieu of notice) runs from the date of the notice of termination, not the actual termination.
