There is no cap on the amount that may be awarded as general damages in an action for defamation: Hill v. Church of Scientology, 1995 CanLII 59 (SCC), [1995] 2 S.C.R. 1130. Some guidance with respect to an appropriate amount may be obtained from other cases but, in the end, damages must be assessed in the context of the facts of each case.
