The following excerpt is from People v. Cleveland, A146434 (Cal. App. 2018):
9. Section 654, subdivision (a), provides in relevant part, "An act or omission that is punishable in different ways by different provisions of law shall be punished under the provision that provides for the longest potential term of imprisonment, but in no case shall the act or omission be punished under more than one provision." "Over the years," our high court has "found the 'act or omission' referenced in [section 654] could be a course of conduct that includes several acts indivisible in time if pursued according to a single objective or intent. [Citations.] If those acts have separate and independent objectives or intents, however, multiple punishment is permissible, even if the acts are very close in time." (People v. Jones (2012) 54 Cal.4th 350, 362, italics omitted.)
