Does section 654 of the California Criminal Code require a defendant to be convicted of a single crime committed by a single criminal objective?

Section 654 states "[a]n act or omission that is punishable in different ways by different provisions of law shall be punished under the provision that provides for the longest potential term of imprisonment, but in no case shall the act or omission be punished under more than one provision." Generally under section 654, a defendant may only be sentenced once for crimes completed by a single physical act or in pursuit of a single criminal objective. (People v.
