Does a defendant have a right to counsel at all critical stages of the criminal process?

California, United States of America

The following excerpt is from People v. Hollis, B281885 (Cal. App. 2018):

"The Sixth Amendment secures to a defendant facing incarceration the right to counsel at all 'critical stages' of the criminal process. [Citations.]" (Iowa v. Tovar (2004) 541 U.S. 77, 87; see People v. Doolin (2009) 45 Cal.4th 390, 417 ["A criminal defendant is guaranteed the right to the assistance of counsel by the Sixth Amendment to the United States Constitution and article I, section 15 of the California Constitution."].) Defendant appears to argue that if the issue has been forfeited, his attorney provided constitutionally ineffective assistance by failing to object.8 We find no constitutional violation.
