Law enforcement officers may conduct inventory searches of automobiles lawfully in police custody. Colorado v. Bertine, 479 U.S. 367, 371-72 (1987). An inventory search is permissible when the property in question is in the legitimate custody of the government and the inventory is conducted pursuant to standardized government procedures.
