The following excerpt is from Butler Group, Inc. v. Munger, 972 F.2d 1337 (9th Cir. 1992):
We review a dismissal for want of prosecution for abuse of discretion. Ash v. Cvetkov, 739 F.2d 493, 495 (9th Cir.1984), cert. denied, 470 U.S. 1007 (1985). Five factors are relevant to our determination: (1) the public policy favoring disposition of cases on their merits; (2) the court's need to manage its docket; (3) the public's interest in expeditious resolution of litigation; (4) the risk of prejudice to the defendants; (5) the availability of less drastic sanctions.
