I respectfully dissent. For the reasons stated in my dissenting opinion in People v. Fries, 24 Cal.3d 222 at page 234, 155 Cal.Rptr. 194, 202, 594 P.2d 19, 27. I disagree with the majority's conclusion that a defendant's credibility may no longer be impeached by admission of a prior conviction of an offense identical or similar to the offense charged.
