What is the effect of section 654 of the California Criminal Code on a defendant who is convicted and sentenced for each crime committed against three different victims?

California, United States of America

The following excerpt is from People v. Saephan, A132344 (Cal. App. 2012):

4. The trial court also noted that there were three different victims. ~(RT 380)~ This fact triggered the "multiple victim" exception to section 654, under which a defendant who entertains a single objective during an indivisible course of conduct may be convicted and punished for each crime of violence against a different victim. (People v. Garcia (1995) 32 Cal.App.4th 1756, 1781.) This exception is not relevant to appellant's argument, as he challenges only the sentences imposed on multiple counts involving a given victim.
