The following excerpt is from People v. Clark, 10 Cal.Rptr.2d 554, 3 Cal.4th 41, 833 P.2d 561 (Cal. 1992):
On October 13, 1982, the trial court granted defendant's request, made in the midst of trial, to represent himself. (See Faretta v. California (1975) 422 U.S. 806, 95 S.Ct. 2525, 45 L.Ed.2d 562.) Defendant conducted his own defense until November 1, 1982. On that day, outside the presence of the jury, the court denied defendant's motion to recuse the prosecutor. When trial recommenced and the court told defendant that it was his turn to cross-examine the prosecution's witness, defendant replied: "Your Honor, the defense stands mute throughout the rest of the trial." Defendant gave no reason for his decision.
