The following excerpt is from People v. J.R. (In re J.R.), A147835 (Cal. App. 2017):
4. In cases involving the imposition of gang-related probation conditions on juvenile offenders, "[w]hether the minor was currently connected with a gang has not been critical." (People v. Lopez (1998) 66 Cal.App.4th 615, 624.) Such conditions have been upheld on the ground that "'[a]ssociation with gang members is the first step to involvement in gang activity[.]' [Citation.]" (Ibid.)
