The standard of care expected is based on the state of medical knowledge available at the time of the alleged negligence. The standard of care to which a doctor must adhere is the standard of care at the time the doctor exercised his judgment, as what was good practice several years ago may not be accepted as good practice today: ter Neuzen v. Korn, 1995 CanLII 72 (SCC), [1995] 3 S.C.R. 674 at 693, (1995) 127 D.L.R. (4th) 577.
