The sexual assaults in this case were very serious.[4] Mr. J.S. had sexual intercourse with his seven or eight-year-old step-daughter on three occasions over an unspecified period with devastating and long-lasting victim impact. There are very few mitigating factors. The primary sentencing objectives, as I have already noted, are denunciation and deterrence. In my view, these offences justify and require a sentence at the high end of the three-to-five-year range set out in R v. B.(J).
