While some leniency may be afforded to a self-represented litigant’s imperfect knowledge of rules and procedures, there must be a balanced approach to ensure the right of the other party to know the legal and factual issues that must be met. The defending party still needs to know what to respond to (see Coleman v. Pateman Farms Ltd et al, 2001 MBCA 75, at para 75).
