Is there an obligation on the respondent to become self-sufficient?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from Buckley v. Morgan, 2015 BCSC 2025 (CanLII):

In response to the applicant’s arguments that the respondent has failed to become self-sufficient, a consideration of the difficulties of her situation makes clear that imposing an obligation on the respondent to become self-sufficient would not be in accord with the law. Her obligation is not to become self-sufficient, but to make reasonable efforts to achieve that goal (McEachern v. McEachern, 2006 BCCA 508 at para. 43). Her surgeries, treatments, and efforts to recover demonstrate that.
