Does the date of a document have to be set out in writing?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from Leung v. Hanna, 1999 CanLII 5377 (BC SC):

In many situations, the dates of documents may well be privileged. Accordingly, there is not a general requirement that the dates of a document be set out. Similarly, there is not a general requirement that the sender or recipient of documents be set out as it may well be the case that this information is privileged. In this regard, the example given by Côté J.A. in Dorchak v. Krupka, supra, at paragraphs 38 and 39 is indicative of the problems which might result if it was necessary to list the person who created a document.

Similarly, it is not necessary to describe any documents in a way which, in the words of McEachern C.J.B.C. in Hodgkinson v. Simms, supra, would allow the other side to: ... look into counsel's mind to learn what he knows, and what he does not know, and the direction in which he is proceeding in the preparation of his client's case.
