Is a common-law relationship that has lasted for a few years invalid?

New Brunswick, Canada

The following excerpt is from Jeffers v Mercer, 2019 NBQB 289 (CanLII):

The parties met in December 2009. They began cohabitating in April 2010. Their relationship went on for a few years, but the duration of their common-law relationship is in dispute. No child is born out of their relationship. At issue in this proceeding is the claim made by each party against certain assets on the basis of the unjust enrichment principles elaborated in Kerr v. Baranow, 2011 SCC 10 (CanLII), [2011] 1 SCR 269.
