What is the test for admissible similar fact evidence?

Manitoba, Canada

The following excerpt is from R. v. Krawchuk, 1988 CanLII 7208 (MB CA):

The leading authority on similar fact evidence is Makin v. A.G. New South Wales, [1894] A.C. 57 (P.C.), where it was laid down that evidence is not admissible where similar fact evidence is adduced "for the purpose of leading to the conclusion that the accused is a person likely from his criminal conduct or character to have committed the offence for which he is being tried".
