Is a permitted driver of a vehicle liable for an accident caused by an unlicensed passenger?

Ontario, Canada

The following excerpt is from Henwood v. Coburn, 2006 CanLII 27869 (ON SC):

In Berege v. Langlois, [1982] O.J. No. 767 (H.C.J.), the owner asked his roommate to drive a friend home and en route the roommate (the permitted driver) allowed the friend, an unlicensed driver, to drive, resulting in an accident. The court held that the permitted driver, as passenger, remained in possession of the vehicle with the owner's consent and, therefore, the owner was liable.
