Turbide v. Moore and these other authorities state that the clean hands doctrine gives the court discretion to dismiss a claim based in equity were the misconduct in question has an “immediate and necessary relation” to the claim or its subject-matter. It is based on the principle that a person cannot use their own “illegal or immoral act” to found such a claim.
