However, the defendant is not liable for damages that were not caused by the injury: Brewster v. Li, 2013 BCSC 774 at para. 78. Under the crumbling skull doctrine, tortfeasors need not compensate the plaintiff for debilitating effects of a pre-existing condition which they would have experienced in any event: Athey at paras. 32–35.
