Does a defendant in a civil action have a right to stay the action pending the disposition of the criminal proceedings?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from nternational Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 213 and 258 et al v BCT Telus Communications et al, 2000 BCSC 380 (CanLII):

I digress to observe that in the Stickney v. Trusz case, Zuber J. had before him a defendant in a civil action who was an accused person in criminal proceedings arising out of the same facts. Zuber J. held that that defendant had no right to a stay of the civil action until the disposition of the criminal proceedings.
