What is the impact of having to be a primary carer for two young children with mental health and learning disabilities on their employment prospects?

Alberta, Canada

The following excerpt is from Y.(A.L.) v. Y.(L.M.), 2001 ABQB 311 (CanLII):

In Raczynski v. Raczynski (1998), 1998 CanLII 13905 (SK QB), 171 Sask. R. 1 (U.F.C.), the mother continued to be the primary caregiver for a son with ongoing alcohol and drug problems and a daughter who suffered from health problems and a learning disability. The court held that although the children were older (19 and 16 years of age at trial), the mother continued to have significant responsibility for the children, which would affect her employability.
