What is the test for determining whether a plaintiff has proven a real and substantial possibility of future event leading to income loss?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from MacDonald v. Kemp, 2014 BCSC 1079 (CanLII):

It is well known that, in evaluating a claim under this heading, I must first address the question of whether the plaintiff has proven a real and substantial possibility of a future event leading to income loss. It is only if the plaintiff discharges this burden that I should turn to the assessment of damages: Perren v. Lalari, 2010 BCCA 140 at para. 32.
