Case law dictates that we read statutes in a manner that will best serve the legislative intent. (Morse v. Municipal Court (1974) 13 Cal.3d 149, 118 [39 Cal.App.4th 1192] Cal.Rptr. 14, 529 P.2d 46.) We believe our interpretation will best serve the legislative goal of imposing punishment commensurate with the degree of culpability which, in this case, equates to increased punishment for those who intentionally inflict great bodily injury.
