What are the objectives of spousal support under the Divorce Act?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from Mancinelli v Mancinelli, 2021 BCSC 94 (CanLII):

The objectives of spousal support under the Divorce Act are analogous to the objectives of spousal support set out in s. 161 of the Act: Namdarpour v. Vahman, 2019 BCCA 153 at para. 136.

In determining the ongoing application for spousal support, the law recognizes three models of spousal support as described in Bracklow v. Bracklow, 1999 CanLII 715 (SCC), [1999] 1 S.C.R. 420 at para. 15, namely: compensatory, contractual, and non-compensatory (needs-based). In this case, only non-compensatory comes into play.
