When is an application to amend to advance a substantive claim?

Nova Scotia, Canada

The following excerpt is from Bramwell v. Locke, 2015 NSSC 140 (CanLII):

When a late application to amend is made to advance a substantive claim, the issue of possible prejudice to the other party arises. Some courts have allowed the responding party to adduce additional evidence to ameliorate any potential prejudice (see Jeffrie v. Hendrikson, 2012 NSSC 335 per Wood, J.).
