The following excerpt is from Natural Resources Defense Council, Inc. v. Winter, 543 F.3d 1152 (9th Cir. 2008):

We have jurisdiction pursuant to 28 U.S.C. 1291. We review the amount of attorneys' fees awarded by a district court for abuse of discretion. Pierce v. Underwood, 487 U.S. 552, 571, 108 S.Ct. 2541, 101 L.Ed.2d 490 (1988). However, "`any elements of legal analysis and statutory interpretation which figure in the district court's decision are reviewable de novo.'" Cabrales v. County of Los Angeles, 935 F.2d 1050, 1052 (9th Cir.1991) (quoting Hall v. Bolger, 768 F.2d 1148, 1150 (9th Cir.1985)).
