The plaintiff must prove that the defendants’ negligence caused or materially contributed to an injury. The defendants’ negligence does not have to be the sole cause of the injury. It must be part of the cause beyond de minimis: Athey v. Leonati, 1996 CanLII 183 (SCC), [1996] 3 S.C.R. 458.
